I attended a genealogy conference in Williamsburg on June 3, with a friend of mine (Hi, Helena! :-) and these are some handy notes from the conference.

Top 10 Genealogy Sites on the Internet
(due to technical difficulties, he only got to seven)

  • http://www.familysearch.org/ - the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints family history site
    • it contains 800 million records
    • you can do a search on a name, then view that person's pedigree chart and family group record, among other things
    • the Family History Library Catalog contains records on 3 billion people

  • http://www.cyndislist.com/ - the premier genealogy link site, has a great surname registry

  • http://www.vitalrec.com/ - index of all holders of vital records in the U.S.

  • http://www.rootsweb.com/ - now you can search all its databases at once
    • in particular, check the Surname Resources on the web - it searches Gedcom files (individuals' family histories in a special format)
  • http://www.usgenweb.com/ - a group of volunteers working together to provide Internet websites for genealogical research in every county and every state of the United States

  • http://www.loc.gov/ - the Library of Congress
    • check out the American Memory Collection - images and sounds from the past
    • also, look for NUCMUC - Archives USA
  • http://www.nara.gov/ - National Archives and Records Administration - go to the Research Room, then click NAIL
