Before - We think this room
was originally the kitchen of the house, because of the chimney between the windows; the
circle is a closed-up vent for a stove. When we removed the old wallpaper and the metal
plate covering the vent, we found it had been stuffed with some newspaper from the 1930s,
so I guess that's when they stopped using it. Hmm, I wonder if that's when the addition of
the current kitchen, laundry area, and bathroom was built.
During #1 - This is our second exchange
student, Nikolaj Kamedula, from Copenhagen, Denmark, who helped us renovate this room
during the fall of 1996.
During #2 - First, we painted
the room that light blue color; I HATED it :-| So then I had the idea to sponge-paint it;
I chose a color that matched our dinnerware, as this was originally going to be our dining
room. I really like how the sponging turned out. It only took about an hour and a half
(the room is about 13' by 15').
After - And now it makes a
great office. As we were renovating, we hired an electrician to rewire the downstairs, and
had a dedicated circuit installed for the computer.
You
can see through the door to the dining room and the curio shelving we put in an old window
opening. The house originally ended behind this wall; an addition was added sometime
before 1960 - we don't know exactly when, but it was there when the previous owners of the
house bought it then.
