Before#1
- This picture explains why I am having difficulty finding good "before"
pictures of our home renovation. We took an entire roll of film as we were moving in, and
then Dan took it to school to take pictures of his first classroom. The house pictures and
school pictures were double-exposed, and this is the result.
This is a highly cropped photo, to give an idea of what the foyer looked
like. Like the rest of the downstairs, the original wallpaper and ceiling are painted a
color we like to call Masking Tape. This is because, after I taped around a window and was
preparing to paint the trim, Dan came in and asked, "Aren't you going to tape the
window first?" That's when we realized that the paint was exactly the same color as
the masking tape :-)
Before #2 - This is another
view of the foyer before we did anything to it. The bottom of the stairs, above, is to the
right and behind the photo below. All the downstairs rooms except the kitchen and bathroom
had beige carpet over the wood floors, which grabbed every possible stain and would not
let go.
This is also a photo of our first
exchange student, Olaf Deutschbein from Germany, who stayed with us from August 1993 to
June 1994. In this photo, Olaf is about to leave for a Halloween party, for which he
borrowed Dan's old Navy uniform.
After - And
continuing around the room to the left, this photo shows the wallpaper and paint patterns
we chose. I got the idea from a decorating magazine I borrowed from a friend. Above the
border is two-inch wide painted mauve stripes, and below the border are four-inch wide
painted burgundy stripes. The background, believe it or not, is the same hated Masking
Tape we removed. The border has the same pattern as the wallpaper pattern we used on the
staircase wall (top photo). I'll put up some more photos of the foyer as soon as we get
some developed.
