As I mentioned to you today, I recently reread the chapter on New Orleans and the Mississippi River from a book by John McPhee called “The Control of Nature.” Or not It’s an easy-to-read history of the Miss. River, the Atchafalaya River, and how New Orleans and the levees came to be. Highly recommended.

I lived there for three years in the 1980s while in the Coast Guard (no choice). It was common knowledge that the original inhabitants (native Americans) chose to live north of Lake Pontchatrain because it was demonstrably unsafe between the Lake and the river (wet teepees). Our smart European ancestors disregarded this logic and built the “Crescent City” right in the loop of the River.

Then there is the Corps of Engineers who on one occasion (1988) presented to the U.S. Coast Guard how their levees were drying up the wetlands and increasing the risk of damage to the delta and surrounding lands.
